SENATOR THOMAS V. MIKE MILLER RECEIVES HONORARY
DOCTOR OF LAWS FROM WASHINGTON COLLEGE
Chestertown, Maryland -- On Thursday, Aug.
23, 2007, Washington College
honored Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., President of the Senate in Maryland,
during the college’s annual freshman convocation awarding President Miller
an honorary doctor of laws. In receiving this award, President Miller joined
many other notable Americans that have received honors for their
contributions to public service from Washington College, including:
Presidents George Washington, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry
S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and George H.W. Bush; Pulitzer Prize
winning authors James Michener, David McCullough, and Richard Ben Cramer;
and dignitaries Jim McKay and Colin Powell.
“This is a tremendous honor.” said President Miller at the convocation. “It
means a great deal to me to receive this degree from Washington College, one
of the most historic and finest institutions of higher education in this
State – and frankly in the country. We are so fortunate to have this jewel
of higher education located right here in Maryland”.
“It is especially fitting for President Miller to receive this honorary
degree from Washington College,” said Tina Bjarekull, President of the
Maryland Independent College and University Association. “Washington College
was founded well over 200 years ago to educate citizens in the task of
democracy, and the College has remained committed to that role by providing
a broad liberal education with a strong historical context. As a student of
history, President Miller often brings rich historical insights to
current-day issues facing the State.”
