A Legacy Of Leadership, Yesterday & Today

As the longest serving State Senate President in
Maryland’s history, and the United States, Mike Miller’s
leadership benefits all of us at home.

Senator Mike Miller began leading in the early 1970's,
in the Maryland House of Delegates. From the House,
Senator Miller made the difficult climb to the state of
Maryland’s second highest office - the President of the
Senate. Since 1987, Mike has served as the Senate’s
Presiding Officer, making Mike Miller: The longest
serving State Senate President in Maryland History, and
in the United States.
Today, Mike’s Leadership works for Prince George’s
County and Southern Maryland in many truly great ways.
Senate Committee Chairman: Leading by Example
After being elected to the Senate 1975, Mike established
himself as a Leader as Chairman of the Judicial
Proceedings Committee. As Chairman, Mike Miller lead his
committee members by enacting tougher criminal penalties
and greater protections for victims. As a Committee
Chairman, Senator Miller recognized the importance of
true leadership.
Taking Leadership to a New Level: The Mike Miller
Senate Presidency
Since 1987, Mike Miller has been Leading as the
President of the Senate. Under many states’
Constitutions, the Lieutenant Governor directs state
senate proceedings, but Maryland places this truly great
leadership responsibility in a Senator elected annually
by a majority of her or his peers. The election for
President of the Senate takes place on the first day of
each legislative session.
In the last eightteen (18) annual elections for Senate
President, Senator Miller has enjoyed the true honor of
receiving the votes of his peers in the senate’s
membership. Every year, Prince Georges County and
Southern Maryland benefit from Mike’s strong leadership
in the Senate.
Mike’s Leadership: Benefits at Home
During his many years as Senate President, Mike Miller
has welcomed several United States Senators and
Representatives to address Maryland’s State Senators. As
presiding officer, President Miller has also hosted
former Governors, such as the Honorable Harry Hughes, as
well as dignitaries, and leaders from numerous countries
around the world, including India and Ireland. And among
his greatest honors as President of the Maryland Senate,
Mike Miller has received several United States
Presidents including, most recently, President William
Jefferson Clinton.
In short, a truly distinguished Legacy of Leadership
that continues to give Mike Miller the opportunity to
better serve the people of District 27 in Southern
Maryland and Prince Georges County.
