Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarship Programs

Residents interested in applying for financial aid from the federal and state government, must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is available after January 1 and can be obtained from your high school guidance office, the financial aid office at any college or university, the public library, Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) or the U.S. Department of Education websites. In order to meet most scholarship deadlines, including the Senatorial Scholarship, you must submit the form no later than March 1.

Once you have submitted your FAFSA form and are financially eligible, you will automatically receive an application for the Senatorial scholarship from my office by the end of May, if you have not already been awarded an Educational Assistance Grant..

Eligibility Requirements for the Senatorial Scholarship:

You must be a Maryland resident and reside in the 27th Legislative District.
You must attend a Maryland college or university, or if you attend an out of state school, you must be enrolled in an academic program that is not offered in Maryland and have approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission

The selection process is based on both financial need and academic merit. The scholarships may range from $200- $2,000 per academic year and are automatically renewed for up to three additional years or until the date of graduation, whichever comes first.

Did you know Maryland has it's own state crustacean?

In 1989, the Maryland Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) was designated the state crustacean. The blue crab is a important bottom-dwelling predator and a member of the swimming crab family, Portunidae. It is widely distributed from Nova Scotia to northern Argentina, but along the coasts of North America, it is most abundant from Texas to Massachusetts. Blue crabs are opportunistic and will feed on a variety of live and dead fish, crabs, clams, snails, eelgrass, sea lettuce and decayed vegetation. Male and female crabs can be distinguished by examining their segmented abdomen. The abdomen is folded and fitted snugly into a groove on the underside of the crab. The male's abdomen is long and slender, resembling an inverted "T". A female's abdomen changes as it matures; an immature female has a triangular shaped abdomen whereas, a mature female's is rounded.
